Prostitution

Appparently there is some new legislation coming into force which will make it illegal to pay for sex with someone who is being controlled by someone else for their financial gain. This is supposedly to stop people trafficking in sex-workers and detaining people against their will in order to force them to work as prostitutes. I’m not sure how prosecuting the punters will get to the pimps though, from what I can gather they seem to be a very secretive lot and the women who work for them are too terrified of reprisals to give any evidence against them anyway.

Should prostitution be regulated in this country as it is in many other Western countries? Legalising brothels would at least offer sex-workers some protection from violent, dangerous men and de-criminalise their activities but it wouldn’t protect those people who are forced to sell their bodies against their will. I can’t imagine the horror of being forced to endure every kind of degraded sexual act imaginable and having no prospect of it ever ending.

Let’s brainstrom this and then send our ideas to the Home Office.

  • It’s a good idea in theory but I think it would be awfy hard to make it a clean and safe business.

These brothels probably have rules like nae drugs and aw that, testing any women who are planning to work there.

That then forces them back tae the red light areas cos that’s the only place they can sell their bodies withoot having tae stay aff the smack.

And as long as these women are stood on the street, there’s gonnae be men driving aboot wanting tae pick them up.

Also, if a guy gets spotted going intae a brothel, he’s no gonnae be too happy aboot it. I think that might put men aff.

This is aw just speculation mind you cos I cannae understand why anybody would want tae pay for sex.

    You’d just feel shite:

“Naebody wants tae fuck me so I need to pay some poor lassie tae dae it. And she disnae even want tae, she’s just dying for another fix…”

Wonder if they’re feeling the credit crunch.

    Who knows.

  • …..Tax Credits for Prostitution

  • It should be legalised to a certain degree maybe large regulated brothels like they have in some counties in Nevada. It would be better if it was woman who ran them to and heavy penalties for unlicensed pimps.
They need more protection I mean that somebody’s daughter out there.
May I add I never had the need to seek the company of a lady of the night come to think of it I don’t know of anyone who has.So I wonder who the guys are that do probably polis and judges etc.

    • I agree – definitely have them controlled by women.

No sure you had to be QUITE so adamant about never having fraternised with one of these professional ladies……. ;)

  • I’d say about at least 90% of women are controlled by ‘pimps’, so that leaves a very small proportion of women who are able to conduct business of their own free will. So the law could potentially have a colossal impact on prostitution, particularly street prostitution.

I don’t agree with women being in charge of brothels – madams can be even worse when it comes to dishing out punishments and rules to adhere to. It all comes down to whether you’re a decent enough person, male or female, to look after the women who are employed to work in your establishment.

Yes, legalisation is a better option than the current situation, but it still sends men the message that it’s alright to degrade, control and hold power over women. I think there needs to be more support services, and specialised rehabs and accommodation for women working the streets. But the government just want them to disappear – they don’t want to spend tax payer’s money on people that they consider to be a waste of time, a lost cause.

Trafficking is a MASSIVE problem, even right here in Scotland. Women need intensive support, safe houses and backing from the Home Office to make a move away from their traffickers. But the reality is, they are one of the lucky ones if they actually manage to escape.

    • In the scenario where a man is paying a woman to have sex with her who is really being degraded and controlled?
I’m all for legalisation, no matter how harsh the law is, people will still sell sex and people will still pay for it. There’s no two ways about it so why not tax it and make it safe?
